Santa Monica's Pacific Park Auctions Holiday Parties on eBay

October 20, 2009

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, the only admission-free amusement park in Los Angeles, has concluded an auction of five holiday party packages that it put up for sale on eBay.

The packages—which are valued at between $2,500 for a party of up to 50 guests and $15,500 for a party of up to 350 guests—were part of a 10-day eBay auction that began on Oct. 10 and expired today at 10 a.m. PDT.

"We understand the difficulty in operating in these challenging economic times," said Director of Marketing and Sales Jeff Klocke. "However, it's the company's employees that suffer the most with the cutbacks. So, we thought this was the right time to help companies recognize their employees' hard work and dedication by creating unique holiday party packages that would be both cost beneficial and raise employee morale."

Pacific Park's holiday party auction is its second such promotion; last year, the park successfully auctioned off a nine-story tall Ferris wheel on eBay.

"The bidding has been steady but we have learned from experience with the Ferris wheel auction in 2008 that the flurry of bids come during the waning hours of the auction," Klocke said in a statement last week, six days into the holiday party auction. "We are rooting for companies with employees that are most in need of a lift in holiday spirit this season."

Although the final numbers weren't immediately available, the holiday parties had received a total of 33 bids as of 8 a.m. PDT, ranging from $28 for a twilight cocktail party of up to 50 guests to $400 for a luncheon of up to 100 guests. In order for the sales to be made, winning bids were required to reach a pre-determined minimum amount, which in some cases was equal to 40 percent off the parties' retail price. Upon conclusion of the auction this morning, it was unclear whether the minimum bids had been reached, and whether the sales would proceed.
